Sports (or sportsmanship) is any form of organized or casual physical activity that, through either organized or non-organized participation, attempt to utilize, maintain or enhance physical capability and abilities while offering entertainment to participants, and sometimes, spectators. The word “sports” itself has various interpretations. Some people consider sports competitions to be competitions of athletic events; others think of it as organized competitions between two or more persons where each one attempts to outdo the other with regard to its own ability or accomplishment. Sports may also be performed between groups of people in a team environment. The object or objects of sports competition may be divided into two general categories: physical activities and mental activities.

The most common physical activity encountered in young people’s daily life is playing sports. Young people, especially students in elementary school are often grouped together and encouraged to participate actively in athletic events like soccer, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, swimming and many more. These young people have the chance to learn to love sports, make new friends, get physically fit, develop good sportsmanship and social responsibility. Of course, this is not an easy task since no two young people are ever the same; even in childhood, we are able to notice the difference between the abilities and capabilities of individuals.

On the other hand, young people in middle schools and high schools are often encouraged to take part in a variety of athletic activities, including track and field events, football, soccer, hockey, cheerleading, volleyball, tennis, softball, baseball, fencing and other physical activities. At this age, young people are also becoming more aware of the need for exercise and are exploring ways to stay healthy by participating in sports and other physical activities. This is also a good platform to begin developing social skills like teamwork, communication and trust. Aside from the physical benefits, participating in sports is also highly beneficial in terms of self-esteem development. Athletes have proven to attain higher grades and achieve success in academic fields and professional careers.

Sports also help in developing physical fitness. Young athletes are taught proper body mechanics and proper movements that are very important in playing sports. The development of the motor skills is also reinforced through sports; for instance, jumping exercises will help develop leg muscles that will be needed in sprinting up and down ramps or in games. As young athletes progress from being mediocre to great, they also go on to have rewarding experiences in various sports. For instance, if a player performs really well in soccer, he is most likely going to have good chances in baseball and other ball sports, in addition to making good impressions on coaches during his athletic career.

With the increasing demand of sports activities and sports recreation, more people are becoming aware of the benefits of getting involved in such sports. At present, there is a growing number of physical education and fitness courses being offered in schools and colleges nationwide. Sports also provide an avenue for those who are less confident in the traditional physical education that is usually part of a standard educational program. Those with less confidence in their physical abilities can go on to participate in sports and get the support they need as they try to improve their skills.

Sports also promote healthy lifestyles. Through sports, young people will develop good attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle. They will be encouraged to set positive examples and set an example for their friends and peers to follow. With their participation in sports and physical activities, they will be motivated to do better at school and beyond. Ultimately, they become more optimistic about life.
